How a high-speed legacy migration unlocked a scalable new product for a behavioral assessment platform

Tilt365 had a clear product vision and an existing user base — but a legacy system holding them back. Effectus Software stepped in to migrate a complex PAA/DNN architecture to a modern Ruby on Rails and Next.js stack, while simultaneously building the Agility Growth Tracker (AGT) from the ground up. The result: a faster, more scalable platform ready for the next stage of growth.

The Challenge

Migrating a complex legacy system (PAA/DNN) to Ruby on Rails at speed, without compromising data integrity or disrupting existing users.

Integrating two distinct technologies — Ruby on Rails and Next.js — within a single mono repo while maintaining coherence and managing dependencies across the stack.

Building the AGT (Agility Growth Tracker) as a new product within the same framework, under tight delivery timelines and with high expectations for feature completeness.

Keeping multiple developers aligned across different parts of the codebase, where speed and coordination had to move together without creating integration gaps.

Keeping multiple developers aligned across different parts of the codebase, where speed and coordination had to move together without creating integration gaps.

The Goal

01.

Complete the migration from PAA/DNN to Ruby on Rails with speed and precision, minimizing risk at every step.

02.

Build the Agility Growth Tracker (AGT) as a standalone, high-performance dashboard within the new mono repo architecture.

03.

Deliver a scalable, maintainable codebase on Vercel — ready for real-time updates, future iterations, and team growth.

The Solution

The legacy PAA/DNN system was migrated to Ruby on Rails, preserving data integrity while modernizing the architecture at the speed the project demanded.

Next.js was chosen for the AGT dashboard for its performance, flexibility, and built-in support for the data-heavy, real-time experience Tilt365's users needed.

A mono repo structure was implemented to house both the Rails backend and the Next.js frontend, keeping the codebase coherent and dependencies manageable across the team.

Vercel was configured as the hosting provider with optimized deployment pipelines for Next.js, enabling fast iteration and reliable releases from the start.

The Methodology

The team approached this project with risk prevention and mitigation as the guiding principles — moving fast without cutting corners.

Planning before building
Every migration step and AGT feature was scoped and sequenced before a single line of code was written, reducing the risk of integration failures mid-sprint.
Parallel workstreams
Migration and new product development ran in parallel, with clear boundaries between tracks to prevent coordination issues from slowing either down.
Technology-first decisions
The choice of Next.js, Ruby on Rails, and Vercel wasn't arbitrary — each was selected for its specific fit with the performance, scalability, and developer experience requirements of the project.
Continuous team alignment
With multiple developers working across the mono repo, structured communication and shared documentation kept the team moving as one unit.
The Result
01.

Legacy migration completed successfully from PAA/DNN to Rubyon Rails: 6-month period, precise, and without disrupting existing users or data.

02.

AGT (Agility Growth Tracker) shipped as a fully functional, high-performance dashboard within the defined timeline.

03.

A modern, scalable mono repo architecture in place — enabling Tilt365's team to iterate faster and onboard new developers with significantly less friction.

04.

Vercel deployment pipeline configured and operational, supporting real-time updates and incremental releases going forward.

05.

99% of practitioners thrilled with the new app.
