How to Create Value during the Daily Scrum Meeting

<a href="https://www.effectussoftware.com/blog/what-is-scrum">Scrum is a framework</a> for teams to approach complex problems and generate a product in an optimized way. Scrum artifacts are part of the Scrum framework. These are documents that help the Scrum team to achieve the Sprint Goal (the result of a Sprint). A Sprint is a 1- to 4-week planning block that guides the development of a product or its features. 



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Scrum Artifacts</h2>



Scrum helps teams simplify the process of developing products, ranging from entire companies to specific software tools. Scrum uses several tools to achieve this; one of them is artifacts. The Scrum artifacts help the Scrum Team achieve the goals set in the various Scrum events.



The Scrum Artifacts also help the Scrum team fulfill the three pillars of Scrum: transparency, inspection, and adaptation. The artifacts are designed to maximize communication among team members and to clarify the process.



The Scrum Artifacts provide information about activities, product development, and the criteria used to determine when a product is ‘Done’, often supported by <a href="https://www.effectussoftware.com/blog/acceptance-criteria-in-software-and-tech">clear acceptance criteria</a> and a plan to be executed.



According to Scrum&#8217;s<a href="https://www.scrumguides.org/scrum-guide.html#artifacts" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> official guide</a>, there are three Scrum artifacts: 




<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Product Backlog</h3>



One member of the Scrum Team is the Product Owner. The Product Owner is the only one responsible for managing the Product Backlog. Each product must have a Product Backlog, which is dynamic and evolves continuously throughout the development process. When the product is reviewed, the Product Backlog receives feedback and grows, enabling the product to adapt to the market correctly.



Therefore, a Product Backlog is a prioritized list of items or features needed in order to reach the final product. High-priority items receive more detail in the Product Backlog, while features further down the list have fewer details.



All the items in the Product Backlog should be “Done” at the end of the Sprint. Features that aren’t complete at the end of the Sprint will be analyzed and added to the next Sprint&#8217;s Backlog based on the Product Owner&#8217;s criteria. 



As previously mentioned, the Product Owner is responsible for managing the Product Backlog. This includes ensuring the items in the list are clear and transparent, correctly prioritizing them to optimize the process, and ensuring everyone on the Scrum Team understands the items in the Product Backlog.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sprint Backlog</h3>



Another part of the Scrum Team is the Development Team. The Development Team is a group of five to nine people who work together to achieve the Sprint Goal. They decide how many items from the Product Backlog can be done in a Sprint. This is called the Sprint Backlog.



The Sprint Backlog is a list of Product Backlog items that can be “Done” in the Sprint, with a detailed plan for how to achieve them. 



The Sprint Backlog is detailed enough to understand what has to be done on a daily basis. Only the Development Team can modify a Sprint Backlog; they do so when items in the list are finished and unnecessary items are removed. The Development Team also tracks the Sprint Backlog to determine whether they will meet the Sprint Goal and to adjust it accordingly if impediments are identified.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Increment</h3>



The Increment is the sum of all the Product Backlog’s items completed during a Sprint. If at the end of the Sprint, the Sprint Goal satisfies the Scrum Team’s definition of Done, then it is considered an increment. The increments represent the goals that were achieved during each Sprint. At the end of each Sprint, the Increment must be usable, and the Product Owners then decide whether to release it.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Could we use GraphQL with Ruby on Rails?</h2>



How many times, as a frontend developer, have you complained about documentation made by the back-end team? About how the fields returned by the endpoints did not return the fields you needed? Or about having to make more than a single call in order to populate a single screen?



On the other hand, how many times, as a backend developer, were you asked to modify an endpoint several times because more attributes were needed? Or to code more than an endpoint because, for some cases, only the username is required, and for some others, the whole user information is needed?



I bet the solutions you’ve thought of for these unpleasant situations require constant communication between the back-end and front-end teams and surely, a lot of rework.



To make your life easier, regardless of the team you belong to, I will introduce you to a new tool that is an alternative to REST. This is <a href="http://www.graphql.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GraphQL</a>.



At Effectus, we&#8217;ve implemented GraphQL in projects ranging from internal platforms to large-scale products as part of our broader <a href="https://www.effectussoftware.com/website-development-services">Website Development Services</a>, helping teams streamline communication between frontend and backend applications.



Formally, GraphQL is a &#8216;query language&#8217; and as such, allows us to make queries and wait for predictable responses. GraphQL’s star feature is that it allows (once the server has been implemented) the front-end developer to request the exact data they need from any entity, and from more than one at a time.

<li>Schema: the core of the server that implements GraphQL. It describes the available resources and the way they are. </li>



<li>Query: A query is a request that users execute for retrieving application information.&nbsp;</li>



<li>Mutation: Like queries, they are a type of GraphQL operation, but unlike queries, mutations have side effects. They could be compared to a POST in REST, while the queries would be the GET. </li>



<li>Resolver: Resolvers are functions responsible for transforming the information that comes in via a GraphQL operation (query or mutation) into the data the user expects. </li>



<li>The input parameters (those sent by the user) are called attributes, and the output parameters (those that the server returns to the user) are called fields.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">GraphQL with Ruby On Rails</h2>



As a<a href="https://rubyonrails.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Ruby on Rails</a> developer, I feel like I have the responsibility of showing you how to implement an API with GraphQL. That said, let’s get to work!



We are going to use the GraphQL gem. We add it to our Gemfile and run bundle install to install the dependencies.



This gem adds a generator to our application that can be executed with the command rails generate graphql:install.



This generates several files (which we will discuss next) and adds a new gem to our Gemfile: graphiql-rails. This gem is used to develop and test what we have already coded. Now we must run bundle install again.



&nbsp;



Within the generated files we have the following:



app/graphql/&lt;name_app&gt;_schema.rb: this file defines the Schema



app/graphql/types/: within this folder various primitive types are defined



app/graphql/types/query_type.rb: this file defines the root_level fields



app/graphql/mutations/: mutations are defined in this folder



app/controllers/graphql_controller.rb: controller in charge of receiving the requests (unique endpoint) and executing the queries.



&nbsp;



After this, we have another generator available for creating our objects:



At this time, we assume there is already an entity in the application called User, along with its corresponding table and model.



rails g graphql:object User name:String email:String items:[Item]



This will generate a new Type for the users entity (UserType) which contains all the attributes of the user that we want to publish.



If the items do not exist, we should create a new type for them.



To allow fetching users,&nbsp; we can add a new field with its respective resolver to the app/graphql/query_type.rb file that will be as follows:



To test it, with our server up, we go to localhost: 3000/graphiql and execute the query as follows:

Dedicate a specific area of your house to work from home</h2>
If you don&#8217;t have a place at home where the only do is work, it&#8217;s time to mount your small office! If you have a desktop computer, you can from there, but if you own a laptop, discarding couches and beds (because you might get sleepy or simply not switch to a working mindset), you can work wherever you feel more comfortable, it doesn&#8217;t need to be a desk as you can just work on any table.
You will have to get used to associating this space with your office whenever you&#8217;re there and having a dedicated home office will help you with that. In order to assure this and to reduce distractions, you can tell others to respect your working spot.
And just like when you&#8217;re in a business office, you shouldn&#8217;t do other things that aren&#8217;t work-related unless they&#8217;re necessary. It&#8217;s okay to put on some music and make some coffee to drink while you work, but turning on the TV to watch your favorite TV show, might not be a great idea. 
<h2>Develop a work from home routine</h2>
Once you&#8217;ve set up a place in your home where you can work, you need to define a work routine. You need to train your brain in order to be able to switch from &#8216;home mode&#8217; to &#8216;work mode&#8217; whenever your work hours start. This is easier to accomplish if you used to have a work routine at your business office, as you can just use the same method (although you might have to tweak it a bit.).
For example, if you used to get up at 5 a.m. to get dressed and have breakfast before leaving for work, then you can still wake up that early if you feel like it, and use the time you used to spend going to work to watch the news, workout or anything you that makes you feel productive. Sleeping in can also be an option, but once your &#8216;work hours&#8217; start, you shouldn&#8217;t do any other thing that isn’t work-related unless they&#8217;re strictly necessary.  
<h2>Organize your tasks</h2>
You need to organize your tasks according to how important and complex they are. Prioritize those that require more focus and effort, as you&#8217;ll be able to solve them faster when you have more energy. Leaving easier tasks for later also lets you use less mental energy at the end of your work routine, so you won&#8217;t end up stressed after finishing your work hours. 
You can use tools like paper notes or phone alarms to remember tasks, as this will help your mind focus on the job that needs to be done.
