Development of Fascioli’s Web App: Case Study in Real Estate

Development processes have always presented these components: good planning, risk prevention, and learning!

Some key technologies you’ll find in the post are Ruby on Rails and Next.js, along with a complex path for migrating databases from PAA/DNN to Vercel.

Here, we present a case study from Effectus Software and Tilt365 that shows how risk prevention and mitigation are paramount in development.

What is Tilt365?

“Everyone is talking about ‘agile.” Agile culture. Agile executive. Agile organization. Now that it’s reached popularity among the masses, the term has become muddled, overused, and distorted… without understanding what it means.

Yet, it is crucial to a team’s ability to move quickly and innovate to drive competitive relevance. Most leaders don’t know that it’s much more than “flexible” or “adaptive,” words often used interchangeably for agile.

What it requires of the people who drive agile behaviors is even more essential. Our research has demonstrated that strong internal character is the central ingredient of an agile culture where innovation is likely to occur.

Way beyond “soft skills,” being agile means showing up focused, influential, and driven towards a common goal. Specifically, it means operating from wisdom, courage, resilience, and humanity all at once. That’s no small feat.”
Pam Boney – Tilt365 founder

Problem solved with A-level development!

One of the biggest challenges we found was migrating PAA/DNN using Ruby on Rails at lightning speed.

Plus, we also chose Next.js because we were going to develop just the AGT (Agility Growth Tracker), following a lean product approach similar to our MVP Software Development Services. To support future growth, we created a monorepo architecture using Next.js and Vercel as the hosting provider.

Technologies used

Next.js is highly recommended for building interactive dashboards, so it came in really handy:

Using Next.js to build a dashboard is highly recommended because of its performance, flexibility, and developer-friendly features. Here are the key reasons why Next.js is a great choice for building dashboards:

The challenge

Speed of Migration: Migrating the systems (PAA/DNN) “at lightning speed” implies a need for efficiency and speed in the transition process. This can be challenging due to potential technical debt, the complexity of the existing systems, and the necessity to ensure that the new Ruby on Rails implementation functions correctly and integrates seamlessly with other components.

Technology Integration: Using multiple technologies (Ruby on Rails and Next.js) within a mono repo can introduce challenges in maintaining coherence, ensuring compatibility, and managing dependencies. Ensuring that the development team is skilled in both technologies and can navigate their intricacies effectively is crucial.

Development of AGT: Focusing on developing the Agility Growth Tracker (AGT) within this framework may entail tight deadlines and a strong emphasis on feature delivery. Balancing the inherent challenges of creating a new product with the need to maintain stability in the overall system can be difficult.

Environment Setup: Using Vercel as a hosting provider requires familiarity with its specific configurations and optimizations for deploying Next.js applications. Ensuring that the development and deployment pipelines are efficient and support rapid iteration is essential.

Team Coordination: If multiple developers are working on different parts of the mono repo, ensuring clear communication and collaboration becomes critical. Working quickly can exacerbate coordination issues and lead to integration problems if not managed well.

Overall, the primary challenge lies in striking the right balance between speed, technical integration, and maintaining quality during the migration and development process. Addressing these issues may require robust planning, clear documentation, effective communication, and possibly increasing the team’s capacity to adapt to new tools and technologies.

Ruby on Rails expert Alejandro Monetti shares insights on why RoR validates ideas fast and effortlessly for your MVP.

Why Ruby on Rails?

The convention-over-configuration approach boosts the development process. A design paradigm used by RoR devs that attempts to reduce the number of decisions a developer makes and to follow the don’t repeat yourself (DRY) principles.

Productivity is a desired concept for teams to achieve goals and objectives. RoR’s organized structure and vast amount of available gems enable teams to be highly productive.

RoR allows quick prototyping, allowing teams and clients to iterate and have immediate feedback.

Scalability and maintenance

High-frequency iteration enables teams to work under agile approaches to make quick adaptations and accommodate requirement changes; this is crucial to meeting and exceeding client and user expectations.

Maintaining clean, clear code is paramount for teams to understand the logic behind it. Pluit’st’s a crucial best practice sinit’st’s needed when:

New team members join

Refactoring is needed

Product is released

V2 or more

Ruby on Rails also enables seamless scalability by optimizing requests, making it easy to move from an MVP to a final product. You can even use microservices when the architecture turns complex.

Challenges and limitations

When developing high-concurrency applications, scalability becomes a critical consideration. As user traffic increases, there may come a point when Ruby on Rails’ performance limitations are reached, particularly in scenarios that require extensive real-time processing or handling large volumes of requests.

It may be necessary to explore alternative technologies that can better accommodate high concurrency, such as microservices architectures or asynchronous processing frameworks like Node.js.

Performance optimization is another vital aspect that cannot be overlooked. While Ruby on Rails offers rapid development capabilities, there are situations where specific optimizations are needed to ensure a smooth user experience.

For instance, if an application experiences slow response times due to database queries or algorithm inefficiencies, developers must implement targeted optimizations.

Rounding up

In summary, Ruby on Rails presents several advantages for developing a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Its convention-over-configuration approach accelerates development time, enabling startups to bring their ideas to market quickly.

The extensive library of gems enables rapid feature implementation, reducing the need to reinvent the wheel. Additionally, Rails offers strong community support, ensuring that developers have access to resources and best practices as they build and iterate on their applications.

Ruby on Rails turns your idea into an MVP

Ruby on Rails is a web development framework, and among the Effectus team, questions about the right tech stack always arise.

The right framework can be pivotal for startups, especially those looking to launch quickly and efficiently. At Effectus, we’ve seen Ruby on Rails remain a strong choice across many of our Website Development Services, helping companies build scalable products while reducing time-to-market. Our team has expertise in different tech stacks, and they’re always eager to learn and try what the savvy world brings up.

So, would we still choose Ruby on Rails for a startup, an MVP, or as a game changer in 2025? Let’s reflect on the ongoing debate about the framework’s relevance in today’s tech landscape.

Ruby on Rails (RoR) is experiencing something of a renaissance, with many developers advocating for its continued use in startups due to its productivity advantages.

Our CTO Juan Pablo Mazza noted RoR’s capabilities in handling common tasks like database migrations and job processing, allowing teams to focus on business logic rather than infrastructure.

This point of view resonated with Effectus co-founder and RoR expert Alejandro Monetti, who emphasized that Ruby on Rails enables rapid iteration, crucial for startups in their early stages.

But, there’s a caveat… while the framework offers powerful tools, it is essential to be cautious about over-abstracting and optimizing for “DRY” (Don’t Repeat Yourself) principles, which can lead to complex, hard-to-debug code.

Turning Complexities with Ruby on Rails Simplicity

The beauty of Rails’ “batteries included” philosophy is that it provides out-of-the-box solutions for a wide range of tasks.

This appeals to emerging startups aiming for MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) without getting bogged down in repetitive coding tasks.

One aspect observed in a project at Effectus is the productivity gains from Rails. Pablo shares his insights:

“It is a fully valid framework for scalability, as demonstrated by large companies like Shopify and GitHub. In our case, due to its convention over configuration principle, it allows us to develop a very clean and tidy codebase that other developers can quickly understand and use to develop new features!”
Pablo Durán – Dev. Team in Tilt365

On the other hand, developers with backgrounds in Go or Python, noted for their performance and simplicity, questioned the dependency-heavy approach of Rails.

They argued that while Rails is fantastic for prototyping, it might introduce complexities that can be hard to manage in the long term, particularly as projects scale.

That’s why we always need to team up!
